🎪 Finding the Right Hula Hoop Size for You
Choosing the perfect hula hoop is like finding a dance partner — it needs to match your rhythm, flow, and body. Whether you’re just starting your hoop journey or exploring new styles, the size of your hoop can make all the difference in how it feels to move and play.
💫 The Golden Rule of Hoop Sizing
A great starting point is to choose a hoop that, when it’s standing upright on the ground, reaches somewhere around your belly button. Larger hoops spin slower, making them easier to control — perfect for beginners learning to waist hoop or find their flow.
Smaller hoops spin faster and respond quickly to movement, which makes them ideal for advanced tricks, off-body flow, and dance-style hooping.
🌀 Hoop Size by Experience
- Beginners: 38–42 inches in diameter (the bigger, the better for learning control).
- Intermediate/Flow Hoopers/Kids: 30–36 inches — a balance of control and speed.
- Advanced/Dance Hoopers: 26–34 inches for quick, responsive moves.
🌈 Don’t Forget the Tubing!
Material matters too! Heavier tubing (like ¾” pex tubing, ¾” HDPE or ¾”polypro) gives more momentum and is great for beginners. Lighter tubing (like 1/2” pex tubing, ⅝” HDPE or ⅝” polypro) is snappy and best for fast flow and tosses. While most HDPE and polypro may need to be ordered online – beginners first starting out can find pex tubing at your local hardware store to make your own hoops. See a video below! These hoops aren’t weighted the best as the connector and rings are a bit heavy, BUT it is a great place to start and a fun DIY project.
❤️ Most Important: How It Feels
At the end of the day, the “right” hoop is the one that feels joyful in your hands. Try a few sizes, spin to your favorite song, and see which one feels best.
Because when it comes to hooping — it’s not about perfection. It’s about play.
